Kebumen Regency Anniversary

Kebumen regency anniversary is cheered up witch procession of hair looms consisting of dagger (keris) and spear (tombak) and also a parade of people who wear traditional costumes. In the night before, to celebrate the new year, the regency makes a fireworks party in the area of van Vanderwijh castle.


January 19th - 20th, 2005
GREBEG DEMAK - Demak Regency

The "Grebeg Besar" is an annual event preceded by 7 day bazaar at Tembiring Stadion, Wonosalam Sub District-Demak Regency. The ceremony is begun on February 11, 2005 in the evening when the "Tumpeng Songo" (nine large bamboo platters of cone shaped rice surrounded by various vegetables) are brought in a procession from the Demak Regent's Residence (the Bupati House) to the Grand Mosque on the town square for blessing prior to distributing to visitors.

The following day on January 20th, 2005 at the grave of Sunan Kalijaga about 2 kms away from Demak Town, the washing ceremony of "Keris Kyai Crubuk and Kotang Ontokusumo" is held. The climax of this event is the time when the oldest heir of Sunan Kalijaga comes out the grave chamber after washing heirlooms. The mass of people who waiting outside the chamber rush shake his hands still wet after washing. If they can shake hands the first of all, they believed that their wishes will be fulfilled.

CLEANSING "BENDE BECAK" - Rembang Regency

The "Bende Becak" is the name of tiny "Javanese Gamelan" musical instrument which is believed as the inheritance of East Java's Majapahit Kingdom in 13 to 14 century. Later, the "Bende Becak" was in the procession of Sunan Bonang one of the "Nine" famous Moslem preacher in 15 century.

The cleansing ceremony takes place at Lasem District, approximately 12 kms east of Rembang on road connecting Rembang-Tuban Town (East Java). It is believed that the water, after having been used for cleansing has super natural power (ie. one may always look young, obtain good luck, easily get partner, etc).
